The Worth of a Masters of Social Work
Those who desire to move beyond the usual four-year college program for the field may go into Masters Social Work programs. Bachelor's graduates go into theis program to further improve on their learning. You are going to be taught advanced skills and concepts not covered by a simple bachelor's degree.
Individuals without a Bachelor’s degree in any major field of study cannot take this Masters class in Social Work. The reasoning behind this is that it is exceedingly difficult to comprehend masters-level lessons without first being given a good base for that understanding. People in the program need to learn a lot of concepts and skills that are necessary for community and societal improvement.
Students here are determined to make a difference, and to contribute to the body of work that has already been done to help others. In other words, this is not a purely academic subject without real currency. People who are very socially active shall find that to their advantage here.
This is a program that is focused on society itself. This means that you cannot expect your studies to ever be simply academic. Students are made to do extensive field research and propose societal solutions while they are actually there in the field.
It is important to remember that theories cannot be confined to paper. There is also much to be learned through direct application of concepts and ideas. You should never stick to a paper-based mode of understanding.
MSW programs typically last for two years. The lessons given to students during these two years are going to be very valuable to them. You can take on more esteemed jobs and positions after you finish your master's degree.
The ability to identify issues and figure out ways to fix them is crucial in this field. Good, sound common sense is required here. This course can also pave the way to further (doctorate) education.
Most of the graduates of MSW go on to become employees of public service groups, both state-run and NGO-type. Third-world countries are going to be the best markets for your talents. MSW graduates shall experience their share of difficulties in such places, even with their training.
The Third World is a primary area of attention for the field. Economically-stricken countries are described as developing countries now, to bring some hope to the matter. People in the MSW program should understand that because their own goal is to help all societies.
While social work is not easy, it has its share of rewards. There are few things that make us feel better than contributing to society. A Master of Social Work aims to equip practitioners to better serve those who are in need of their services.
